R N Smith

Prof. R. N. Smith, whose real name was Ramie, died of dropsy last Saturday at the residence of Mr. John Tugwell, north of Farmerville. Prof. Smith had seen better days. He had served in both branches of the Texas legislature. Shortly before his removal to this parish he got into trouble in Texas, growing out of the financial affairs of the Texas penitentiary of which he was manager. In order to avoid arrest he came to this parish, where he assumed the name of Smith and engaged in teaching school near Cherry Ridge. A year or so ago Prof. Smith returned to Texas, and cleared himself of the charge against him.
