October 26, 1898
This sad news was brought to our town Tuesday morning by Mr. J. A. Gresham; and it was indeed quite a shock to Mr. Steele’s many friends here. The deceased passed away Monday morning about four o’clock at his plantation home on Bayou Bartholomew, after a brief illness with slow fever. He was about 50 years of age.
Mr. Steele is a brother of ex-Auditor O. B. Steele; and they were associated together many years in the mercantile business at Ouachita City, where they did a heavy advancing business.
A few years ago Mr. Steele retired from the mercantile business and moved to a plantation on Bayou Bartholomew where he gave his entire attention to his planting interests. Despite the low prices of agricultural products he was quite successful in his new calling.
Mr. Steele was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor, and true and jolly friend. His unexpected death will be deplored by all who knew him.
