William Jesse Fomby, 63, passed away at 9:15, on Sunday morning, January 8, 1961, in the Veterans Hospital in Alexandria after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Monday afternoon at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Reverend James Gray officiating. He will be assisted by Reverend Billy Smith. Burial will be in the Shiloh cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick funeral home.
Jesse was the son of Wilson Lump and Bella Elizabeth Coplen Fomby, born July 17, 1897 in Texas. They had many ventures over the years, such as a move to Texas in a covered wagon. The family moved back to Shiloh and there he met his wife, Bertha Lee Tabor. When he proposed he said, “I love my mother, but I love you more.” They were married on March 23, 1918.
He would go on to serve in WWI where he fell ill with pneumonia and suffered lung disease for the rest of his life.
The couple would settle in Shiloh with their growing family. Their children were Jesse Marvin, William Lee, Robert Laurence, Mary Beatrice, Doris Marie, James Wilson, Evelyn Aline and Tressie Lee. James Wilson would die at 3 days old. Marvin would be killed in France while serving in WWII. Robert was seriously wounded, while W.L. was away serving through the duration of the war. Their daughter, Beatrice, enlisted in the WAVES, saying “If my brothers are going, I am too.”
After all their children were married with children of their own and his health failing, Jesse and Bertha moved to Bernice.
Jesse leaves his loved ones, his wife Bertha; his mother, Mrs. Bella Fomby; two sons, W. L. and Robert and his wife, Lovie; his daughters, Beatrice and her husband Oscar Fleisher, Doris and her husband T. D. Crowell, Evelyn and her husband Palmer Moore, and Tressie and her husband Frank Upshaw; his sisters, Mrs. Bertie Allen, Mrs. Ruby Gilbert and Mrs. Gordie Brown; and his grandchildren, Harvey Fleisher, Linda Fomby, David Fleisher, Karen Fleisher, Kathy Moore, Mike Upshaw, Sheryl Fleisher, Debbie Upshaw and Leona Crowell.
