Mary E. Hazelbaker was born in Eudora, Arkansas to W. O. and Mary Elsie Hazelbaker on Sept. 3, 1921. She attended the Eudora schools for her entire school experience. She attended Arkansas Women’s College in Conway, Arkansas before enlisting in the U. S. Navy.

She passed away January 21, 2013. Mary was a resident at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe, La.

Mary Elizabeth, who was known as ‘Sis’, was one of the original Waves in the Navy and would go on to serve some 23 years in the Navy as an Intelligence Specialist. She would spend most of her service time in Ft. Mead, Md. and Hawaii.

During the interim, after the Waves were disbanded and then re-formed, she met and married the love of her life, Herbert Manning, who was a career Army enlistment specialist. After her Navy career, Mary and Herb built their home in Marion, La. Sis loved painting, hand craft work and reading books of all kinds.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Herb, her parents, and two brothers, Oscar and Jack.

She is survived by two sisters, Virginia Hemby of Vicksburg, Miss., and Jane Brooks of Pensacola, Fla; a brother, George Hazelbaker and his wife, Ann of Duncan, Ok., and numerous nieces & nephews.

The funeral for Mary will be 10am Saturday at Farrar Funeral Home, Farmerville, La. Burial will follow in Roark Cemetery in Marion, La.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family request any donations be made to hospice.
